Passing any of the UPSC examinations is significant in getting a safe civil job in India.  These can be taken after 10 + 2 and some are taking any of these after graduation.  Although these examinations may not the only criteria for landing a job, still getting eligibility of any of these examinations could give an edge over other job seekers.
There are about nine choices of UPSC competitive examinations that a person could take to land a job in India.  One of which is the Civil Services Examination. Geologists Examination is another type of examination that is being given for applicants interested in two category positions. CIVIL Services Examination
The Indian Civil Services forms the backbone of the Indian government machinery & constitutes all the major departments which run the state & central administration, also one of the most prestigious examinations conducted by UPSC. The three types of services recruited through the Civil Services Examination are All India Services, Central Services, and State Services. Civil Services is also popularly known as the IAS exam or the UPSC exam and is considered one the toughest competitive exams in the world.
Entry into the IAS, IPS and the Central Services, Group A and Group B is through the All India Combined Competitive Examination for the Civil Services conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in different centers spread all over the country.
Candidates must complete a three-phase process, with a success rate of about 0.1 percent of the total applicants:

Civil Service Examination 2011 (Pattern and Procedure)
From Civil Service Examination 2011, Preliminary Examination would consist of two papers- Paper I and Paper II. The syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination would be as under:
(Paper 1) (200 marks) – Duration : Two hrs.
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian national movement
  • Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
  • Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
  • General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that donot require subject specialization

(Paper II) (200 marks) – Duration : Two hrs

Civil Services Mains Examination:
  1. The Main Examination will consist of a written examination and a subsequent interview.
  2. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of conventional essay type model. The range of questions may vary from just two marks to thirty marks, twenty words to 600 words answers.

Education Qualification:

  4. Candidates who have appeared at their final year an examination the passing of which would render them educationally candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifying examination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.
  5. All candidates who are declared qualified for the Commission’s examination but have not been informed of the results as also the by the Commission for taking the Civil Services (Main) Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination with their application for the Main Examination failing which such candidates will not be admitted to the Main Examination.
  6. Candidates who have passed the final professional M.B.B.S. or any other Medical Examination but have not completed their internship by the time of submission of their applications for the Civil Services (Main) Examination, will be provisionally admitted to the Examination
Age Eligibility:
Prescribed age limits are minimum 21 years and maximum of 30 years as on 1 August of the year of Examination. As on 1 August candidates should not have attained or completed 30 years. In case on that day a candidate whose age is 29 years and 360 days means still he is qualified to take the examination. 1 August to 1 August is the criteria. Those who are in 20s should have attained 21 and those who are in 30s should not have attained 30 years.
Age relaxation:
  1. The upper age limit prescribed will be relaxable to General Category and the OBC candidates come under the category of creamy layer.
  2. The upper age limit prescribed will be relaxable to OBC candidates’ up to a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
  3. The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable up to a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.
  4. The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable up to a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped persons.

Indian Economic/Statistical Service Examination
·         The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Indian Economic Services (IES) Exam and Indian Statistical Services (ISS) Exam to recruit Grade IV officers. Indian Economic/Statistical Services Exam is generally notified in June and conducted in the month of November. To attend these exams at least eligibility is required graduates in Economics and Statistics. Both ISS and IES position comes under central government services which are involved in economic planning and analysis through state boards, planning commission and other government owned bodies in the country.
·         Age Eligibility: 21-30 years on 1st January of the year of Examination. Certain categories of persons as specified in the notice are eligible for age relaxation.
·         Educational Qualifications: For Indian Economic Service : Post Graduate Degree from a recognised university in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics. For Indian Statistical Service: Post Grade Degree from an Indian university in Statistics/Applied Statistics/Mathematical Statistics.
·         Physical Standards : Candidates must  be physically fit according to the Regulations given in Appendix – III of the Rules for the Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service exam 2010 published in the Gazette of India dated 05.06.2010
·         Candidates appearing in qualifying degree exams are also eligible provisionally subject to producing proof of passing along with Detailed Application Form.

Indian Forest Service Examination

The Indian Forest Service (IFS) conducted by UPSC every year for recruiting officers for the Forestry service of India. This Service was created in 1966 for protection, conservation, and regeneration of forest resources. It is also an All India service like IAS and IPS. Its employees are recruited by the national government but serve under the state governments or Central Government. Exam pattern is similar to other civil services, and selection is done in three phases. Selected candidates are get trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, which is followed by specialised orientation for the Forest Service at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun. After training candidates are posted as the assistant conservator, district conservator, chief conservator, principal conservator, and the inspector general of forests. The senior most post is that of the Environment Secretary in the Union Government.
Education Qualification: Entry is open to candidates who hold A Bachelor’s degree with at least one of the subjects namely, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Forestry or Agricultural Engineering from a recognised University or equivalent.
Candidates appearing at their degree examination (with prescribed subjects) are also eligible to compete. Candidates qualifying on the result of the written part of the examination will be required to submit the proof of passing the requisite examination alongwith their detailed application form to be filled up at that stage.
Age Eligibility: ages of 21 and 30 as on July 1 of the year of the examination. Upper age limits are less restrictive for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes and Other Backward Classes (SC/ST/OBC).
Exam Notification of the Indian Forest Service Examination is generally in February. The written essay-based examination is conducted in July and is conducted in English. Each paper is of three hours’ duration.

Combined Engineering Services Examination
Information and Qualification for the Combined Engineering Services Examinations in India:
The combined engineering services examination is again being conducted by the Union Public Services Commission of India or the UPSC. This will enable a person to enter engineering services such as the following listed below:

All successful passer of the combined engineering services examination will have a special post on the following fields distributed in the government agencies of India. Please refer to the list below:

  1. You must be a graduate of Engineering from a known and reputable college or university in India.
  2. You must belong to the bracket of sections A and B of the institution of Engineers in India.

  4. You must have passed India’s Membership examination of the institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers
  5. You must pass the part 2 and 3  or sections A and B in the Associate membership examinations of the aeronautical society based in India as well as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
  6. You must also succeed in the membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers that was hosted in London in 1959.

Geologists Examination
Geologists Examination UPSC:  Geologists study Earth’s materials, processes, structure and species that have evolved during the history of earth. Their work is important to the country as they study the pattern of floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides in the past. Based on their study they predict these natural disasters probability in the future thus saving a lot in terms of human life and assets.
Geologists Examination is conducted by UPSC every year to recruit for the posts as per the following two categories:
1. The first category has two positions in the Geological Survey of India:
  • Junior Geologist, Group A and
  • Assistant Geologist, Group B
2.    The second category has two positions in CGWB (Central Ground Water Board) at select centers in India.
  • Jr. Hydrogeologist, Group A and

Candidates, chosen are appointed on probation for two years. During their tenure candidates undergo training and after that a test is conducted the competent authority.
Eligibility Criteria:
a.  Age Limits: Candidates should at least be 21 years of age and must not exceed the age limit of 32 years on January 1 of the year of examination. Candidates belonging to the PH, SC, ST and OBC categories are offered some relaxation in terms of age
b.    Educational Qualifications: Candidate must have one of the following educational qualifications:
  • Master Degree in Marine Geology or Applied Geology or Geology
  • Master Degree in Mineral Exploration (only for positions in Geological Survey of India only)
  • Master Degree in Hydrogeology (only for positions in CGWB)
c.    Diploma in Applied Geology of the Indian School of Mines.

Candidates must apply through the common application form, which is available for cash payment of Rs. 20 at selected Post Offices all across the country. Separate form has to be used for each examination.
Applications Fee is Rs 100/-, payable through Central Recruitment Fee Stamp only. SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from application fee.

·         Qualifications of candidates for SCRA Examination
·         The undergraduate course Mechanical Engineering could be the most promising yet difficult course in college. Though the survivors can be labeled as the outstanding ones, takers of this course might just bleed and sweat some more just to become a candidate of the Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination. Once you have been chosen as a candidate for this exam, you should know to yourself that you stand among the rest. However, it’s not enough to just become a candidate or a passer. If you want to reach the top, you must be fully prepared for the toughest exam you’ll face in your studying years.
·         The Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination is an examination for selected students of the undergraduate course Mechanical Engineering exclusive in India. It was started in the year 1927 by the British colonizers. The test was mainly started for the British to choose among the intelligent Indians who can assist them in their Railway Operations.
·         In order to qualify for the Special Class Railway Apprentices Examinations, the applicants for the exam must pass either the first or second division of the intermediate examination or any equivalent exam. The university must also be approved by the government. Those who have graduated Mathematics or students who had Physics and Chemistry as one of their college subjects are accepted. The candidate must at least be 17 years old on August on the year of the examination.
·         An exam on English, English, Science, and Mathematics is the first phase. Those who have passed will then be directed to the personality test. They will then be given four-year training on Mechanical Engineering.
·         The exam is a tough one. The General Ability Test which includes English, General Knowledge, and Psychological Test with a total of 200 items can only be taken for two hours. The same number of hours goes to the Physical Sciences and Mathematics category, also with a total of 200 items each.
·         The hardship that the candidates have undergone with the Special Class Railway Apprentices Examinations and the four-year training is then paid off with their employment in the Railway organization. The most fortunate one will be entitled as an officer of the junior scale. Promotion towards the senior scale occurs in two years. Further promotions will be given in the succeeding years of service in the Railway organization. Some graduates may also be appointed as Divisional Railway Managers.

National Defence Academy Examination

UPSC is going to conduct the Coveted UPSC NDA Examination 2011 to select suitable candidates for admission into the Army, Air Force and Navy wings of the National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination (II), 2011. This is the 128th batch of NDA and 90th of the Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC). The candidates selected through these examinations get a chance to serve their Motherland India and fight for it in case of any adversities. These jobs are highly prestigious and very rewarding. An NDA cadet stands apart and courageously faces the challenges of his job and emerges as a winner in all aspects of life. The course will start from June 2012 as per UPSC guidelines. A total of 335 posts are there to be filled. Following is the division of seats amongst different categories:

  • Navy – 39 Seats
  • Indian Naval Academy – 35 Seats

Candidates join a four years B.Tech Course in Executive and Technical Branches of the Navy and 10+2 cadet Entry Scheme.
Age limit: Male candidates who are born between 2nd July, 1993and 1st January, 1996 are eligible to apply.
Educational qualification: Candidates who have passed 12th OR equivalent examination conducted by State Education Board (OR) a Registered University. For Navy and Naval Academy and Air force,
candidates should have passed 12th (OR) equivalent examination conducted by State Education Board or university with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects.
Application fee: Candidates should submit a fee of Rupees 50 in any branches of SBI (fee waiver for SC/ST candidates), (OR) submit their fee online by net banking (OR) by credit/debit card. Candidates who are applying offline should deposit Rupees100/- via Central Recruitment Fee Stamp (CRFS) only.
How to apply: The eligible candidates have two options to apply:
1. The candidates can apply online through official website of UPSC (www.upsconline.nic.in) on or before the last date (09-05-2011).
2. Candidates can also apply offline by filling new common application form. Forms can be purchased from selected Post Offices across India by making a payment of Rs 30. Combined Defence Services Examination
The Qualifying Requirements Before Taking The Combined Defense Services Examination:
In order to be part of the Indian Military Academy, you will have to pass the Combined Defense Services Examination which is solely conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and done two times a annually during the months of February and August. You will get the results of your examination during the months of August and March. By passing the CDS examination, you not only get the chance to be part of the Indian Military Academy, but will also have the chance to go to the following institutions. Once a notification stating that you passed the Combined Defense Services Examination, you will be interviewed by the Service Selection Board or the SSB. They will be the one to give the final verdict if you will be admitted or not.
Before taking the Combined Defense Services Examination, there are certain eligibilities that you have to consider first. To know more about them, please refer to the list below:
  1. The exam can only be taken by a single or unmarried Indian national.
  2. The person to take the exam should be a citizen of India, a subject of Bhutan or Nepal.

  4. For the officer’s training Academy – Born between January 2, 1987 to January 1, 1993.

  6. You must have the following education attainment before taking the Combined Defense Services Examination; you must have a degree from a reputable college if you want to enter the Indian Military Academy, Bachelor of Engineering or BS Science in Physics or Math if you want to enter the Naval and Air Force.

Combined Medical Services Examination
Information and Eligibility Requirements for the Combined Medical Services Examination in India:
The combined medical services examination is also conducted by the Union Public Service Commission of India for the purpose of filling up posts to the different medical posts needed for the government of India. The exam is usually being announced during the month of September and the exam takes place during the month of January.  Candidates who are successful to pass the test will be notified and will have a scheduled interview with the officers of the UPSC.
The scheme of the exam will be the following. Please refer to the list below:
First Set:
  • 60 % – will come from questions related to general medicine from the fields of cardiology, neurology, dermatology and psychiatry.
  • 40 % – will come from questions related to surgery including information about ENT, Ophthalmology, Traumatology, and of course Orthopedics.
Second Set:
  • 20 % – will come from questions related to Pediatrics.
  • 40 % – will come from questions related to gynecology and obstetrics.
  • 40 % – will come from questions related to the topic about how to deal with social and community needed medicine and preventive care.
The total points of the exam will be 400 all in all. But you will also have to undergo a personality test which will give you a total of 200 points – additional.

  1. You must be a citizen or a subject of India, Nepal, Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who settled in India on January 1, 1962.

  3. Age limit is older than 32 years.
  4. The person applying must have a passing mark in the practical parts of the MBBS Examination.
  5. The person should also be physically fit and medically fit to take the combined medical services examination.
